Suggested ages 7+ with adult help · Allow 30–45 minutes · 2 A4 pages
Print your template and guide
The first page contains the template or planning sheet; the final page has materials, making instructions and discussion ideas. Free for home and classroom use. Print single-sided in black and white. Print folding templates at actual size.

You will need
The template, one extra sheet of paper, pencils, scissors, glue and tape.
Make it step by step
Colour the eagle and the rectangular sign. Cut around their outside edges with adult help.
Roll a separate sheet tightly from one long edge to make a paper pole, then tape it closed.
Tape the eagle to the top and the sign below it. Keep the pole as a paper craft prop.
Add a group name or symbol to your sign and explain what it means.
Tips and questions
Ask why a recognisable symbol might help a group identify itself. Compare the paper pole and flat eagle with the materials and form of a real standard.
Connect it with Roman Britain
The eagle was a symbol used on Roman legionary standards. This design combines a simple eagle silhouette and space for your own sign; it is not a copy of a particular ancient standard.
Suggested ages are a guide. Read the instructions together and adapt the practical work to your learners. Ask an adult to help with cutting.
