Make a paper writing tablet
Create a foldable paper message tablet and compare it with Roman writing tools.
Ages 7–11 · Allow 30–45 minutes · 2 A4 pages
Print your activity
Page 1 is the activity sheet. Page 2 has answers, discussion ideas or making notes for an adult. Free for home and classroom use. Print single-sided in black and white; use actual size for folding templates.

You will need
The PDF, a pencil and crayons; scissors are optional with adult help.
Try the activity
Write a message inside the two panels using a pencil.
Colour the frame to look like wood, keeping the message readable.
Fold on the dashed centre line and pass the message to a partner.
Grown-up notes and answers
A modern pencil mark differs from a groove in wax. Ask which parts might survive after the wax was lost and what would make the message difficult to read.
Connect it with Roman Britain
Some Roman wooden writing tablets had wax surfaces written on with a stylus. Our version uses paper and pencil, with no hot wax or sharp tools.
Suggested ages are a guide. Read the instructions together and adapt the writing or practical work to your learners. An adult should help with cutting.
