Governors and commanders
Masclus
An officer known through a Vindolanda letter that combines a request for orders with a practical supply problem.

Masclus appears as a decurion in a wooden letter from Vindolanda addressed to Flavius Cerialis. The message asks what a detachment should do next, then adds that his fellow soldiers lack beer and asks for more to be sent.
The letter is valuable because it combines command and everyday needs in one document. An officer needed instructions about the movement of people, while also communicating a shortage affecting the group. These concerns belong to the same working military organisation.
Parts of the text are difficult to read and interpret. The scholarly edition marks uncertainty about the instructions and some wording. Its famous supply request should not distract from those less straightforward passages, or become the basis for an invented biography.
Context and evidence
Read the notes beside the translation. A surviving message can tell us about a specific problem while leaving the sender’s career, origins and later life almost entirely unknown.
